Guilty, six years jail.
Both sides are expected to appeal.

I didn't get in the court room, instead waited in the corridor outside with about 50 JMS followers, several I recognised.
That was a pretty fascinating experience in itself!

Looks like Reuters are first with the story, AP should follow shortly:

South Korean religious sect leader jailed for rape

SEOUL (Reuters) - A South Korean court on Tuesday sentenced Jung Myung-seok, the leader of a fringe religious sect, to six years in jail for raping female followers, a court official said.

Jung, 63, the leader of the Jesus Morning Star sect (JMS), fled to China from South Korea in 2001 where he had been charged with selecting followers from photographs and then forcing them to have sex with him.

He was arrested in May 2007 in northeastern China and brought back to South Korea in February 2008 to face trial.

Former members have told the Seoul court that young and attractive women were presented to Jung as "gifts" and he forced them into sex as a part of a purification ritual.

Jung has denied any wrongdoing.

"We expect both sides to appeal," an official with the Seoul District Court said, adding the prosecution was likely to argue for a higher sentence while Jung's lawyers seek to overturn the conviction

South Korean media said JMS was founded in 1980 and expanded into Japan under the name "Setsuri", which means providence. It has also moved into other countries.

AJ was there, she's the senior cult member who has toured the US a few times in recent years.
She didn't look quite as cheerful as she does in this video:

And a big surprise for me was seeing a former co-worker. I'm pretty sure she wasn't in the cult when I knew her 4 years ago, but she is, or at least she was a few minutes before the verdict was announced...hopefully the verdict will provide her an opportunity to reflect on her worship of a serial rapist.
I regret not saying more to her, but we were both surprised to see each other and it was just as the people were leaving the court. She asked me if I was JMS and I said, "No anti-jms, very anti-jms." "I am JMS," she replied. "Well it was nice seeing you anyway."

And I wish I had tried to speak to a few more members, there were about 50 JMS there and I was with 3 other anti-jms people. Fascinating experience. Unfortunately no video footage, I had to leave my bag in the cop office. I filmed a little outside the court house - beautiful building - but it's nothing that interesting. Just the building, a few comments from me, and a shot of a small group of members.

Oops, I can't update the homepage until I get back to Daegu....maybe tonight, but something may come up that might keep me here in Seoul overnight. Yes, something cult related.

Korea Times:

    By Park Si-soo
    Staff Reporter

Notorious cult leader Jung Myung-seok received Tuesday a six year prison sentence for raping and sexually abusing his female followers.

The Seoul Central District Court said in its ruling, ``Jung is senile and has no criminal record. But he repeatedly raped and sexually harassed several female followers who had trusted him as the Messiah, inflicting immense mental damage on his victims.''
``Even worse, the accused took no action to mitigate their pain and show remorse for what he did.''

Jung, who headed the cult Jesus Morning Star or JMS, was indicted in February on charges of sexual abuse.

He fled the country in March 2001 when police began investigating him after former members of his cult came forward with his history of sexual violence. He was caught by Chinese police in February this year and extradited to Seoul, ending seven years of exile overseas.

In 1999, JMS members made threats against the head of an association representing Jung's victims for defaming Jung.

Jung formed JMS in the early 1980s, calling himself a messiah who can lead people to salvation. His doctrine says Jesus
failed in his role as savior and denies the concept of resurrection.

pss@koreatimes.co.kr

I like the senile comment, but I'm not sure how him not having a criminal record until today is relevent. He was a fugitive for some 9 years, that's why he hadn't been convicted until today.
And isn't it hilarious that if he had stayed in Korea, he'd probably be a free man now.

And he fled Korea in 1999, not 2001.
And they didn't just threaten critics, they tried to kill the father of Korea's most outspoken critic:

SEOUL - A SOUTH Korean court on Tuesday handed a six-year jail term to a religious cult leader for raping his female followers before spending several year on the run in China.
Jeong Myeong Seok - whose JMS sect stands for both Jesus Morning Star and the initials of his name - was convicted of raping or sexually assaulting three women between 2001 and 2006.

Jeong, now in his early 60s, fled South Korea in 1999, one day after rape allegations against him were broadcast on national television, and was charged with rape in his home country in 2001.

He was arrested in Hong Kong in 2003 for visa violations and later fled an extradition hearing. China extradited him to Seoul in February.

Former cult members, mostly young girls, have told police they were instructed to undress for health checks and to have sex with Jeong to remove their sins.

The girls said they were threatened with spiritual death if they spoke of what happened, according to previous media reports.

News reports have said Jeong, who founded the cult in the late 1980s, was still believed to have thousands of followers, including students, soldiers, teachers and children. -- AFP

OK, I'll be here all night if I keep posting news articles.... time to hop on a train home and update the homepage.

Nothing from the Moonies, yet... I wonder if they'll pick it up?
Jung being the black sheep of the Moonies, perhaps they would rather leave the story alone?
That's what I would do if I was a Moonie!

Looks like Reuter's published in several languages. So here's how to say

JoongAng has a good original article:

JMS cult leader is convicted of rape
August 13, 2008
Jung Myung-seok, self-proclaimed messiah and founder of the JMS cult, was convicted yesterday of sex crimes against female believers and sentenced to six years in prison.

The Seoul Central District Court ruled that the 63-year-old cult leader is guilty of raping three female followers. “At the time of the sexual crimes, the victims had believed that Jung was the messiah and worshiped his absolute authority,” said presiding Judge Bae Gi-yeol. “Therefore, the victims were psychologically unable to resist the crimes.”

Bae also said the court has no reservations about handing down a severe punishment because Jung’s crimes are “extremely heinous, but he denied any wrongdoing.”

Following media reports about the abuse allegations, Jung fled Korea in 1999 and had been hiding in neighboring countries. He was extradited from China in February this year to face the charges.

During his time on the run, a series of accusations of sexual abuse surfaced in other countries as he continued to expand his cult abroad. In 2001, he fled Taiwan after authorities there began to investigate him on rape charges. In 2003, Interpol put him on a list of fraud and sex crime suspects.

After questioning, Seoul prosecutors indicted him on charges of sexually assaulting five female Korean believers from 2001 to 2006 in Malaysia, Hong Kong and China.

Of the five charges, he was convicted on three counts of rape, acquitted on one count, and one case was dismissed because the victim dropped the charges.

Jung had pleaded not guilty to all the charges, claiming that false testimony and accusations were being made against him by Exodus, an anti-JMS group founded by former followers of the cult.

Formerly a member of the Unification Church, Jung established JMS, also known as Providence, in Seoul in the early 1980s.

Thanks, I think that's the best one so far. And the first to mention the Moonie connection.
Did you see that the North Korea Times links to it?

Here's a screen shot, I've got to save this one... Wow, being labeled a cult by North Korea, that's got to hurt!

And RB, I've just created a new album on our photobook, called "guilty"

And I just noticed all the additional links yo posted... wow, you're a legend!

A great original article by Korea Herald:

Cult leader sentenced to 6 years in South Korea

A Seoul court yesterday sentenced the leader of the religious cult Jesus Morning Star to six years in jail for raping and sexually assaulting five of his followers.

Jung Myung-seok, 63, was charged with assaulting the women in 2001, 2003, and 2006 in Malaysia, Hong Kong and China, by abusing his religious authority.

"Despite his old age and lack of a previous criminal record, his guilt is perceived to be extremely serious, in that he raped his church members, who regard him as a messiah, on several occasions," Bae Gi-yul, presiding judge at the Seoul Central District Court, said in his ruling.

"Despite the indescribable mental suffering of the victims, he did not make any efforts to console them or repair the damage, and shows no signs of repentance."

Jung, a self-proclaimed living messiah, was captured by Chinese police in May 2007 on sexual assault charges eight years after he had fled the country following rape allegations first raised here in 1999.

Jung, who had been on the Interpol red notice since 2004, was extradited by Chinese authorities in February this year.

Jung led a fugitive life in various countries such as Japan and Hong Kong. He was also charged with fraud, sexual abuse and embezzlement.

In January 2008, the Supreme Court ordered Jung to pay two female followers - one Korean and the other Japanese - consolation money, amounting to 60 million won (US$58,000) each, for having sexually assaulted them in the 1990s.

Jung claimed that having sex was part of a religious purification ritual for salvation.
